So…what’s a “mizzen”?
The
word “mizzen” refers to the small mast and sail at the aft end of yawl- and
ketch-rigged sailing yachts. It adds power and speed in fair winds,
stability and security in stormy weather and peace of mind while at anchor
at the end of the day.
Modern-day yacht
builders rarely commit to the extra expense of adding a mizzen sail to their
vessels. However, for the voyaging sailor who has no control over weather
and sea conditions, that little sail at the back of the boat can make the
all difference in assuring a safe and sound passage to the next landfall.
